2. Protection Circuits: Special Requirements for Lithium Batteries
Lithium battery chargers need to be equipped with protection circuits to prevent overcharging, over-discharging, and other unsafe conditions. Lead-acid battery chargers do not have this requirement. This is because lithium batteries, if charged with too high a voltage or current, can experience internal short circuits, which may even lead to battery explosions. Therefore, lithium battery chargers come with specialized charging equipment to ensure the safety and longevity of the battery.
 
3. Charging Modes: Different Processes
Lead-acid battery chargers are usually set to a two-stage or three-stage charging mode. The charging process for lithium batteries is more complex. Lithium battery charging starts with a constant current (CC) phase, and when the battery voltage reaches a certain level, the voltage remains constant while the charger monitors the current. If the current drops below a certain threshold, the charging process ends. This method differs significantly from the three-stage charging process of lead-acid batteries, which includes constant current, constant voltage, and trickle charging.
